Background of the Study

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborns that occurs due to an excess of bilirubin in the blood, leading to the yellowing of the skin and eyes. If left untreated, severe jaundice can lead to brain damage or death, making it a critical issue in neonatal care. Nurses are often responsible for identifying and managing neonatal jaundice, as they perform routine screenings, administer phototherapy, and educate parents on care protocols. Effective management of neonatal jaundice depends on early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up care.

In Kebbi State, where healthcare resources are limited and rural areas face significant challenges in accessing specialized care, the role of nurses in managing neonatal jaundice is crucial. However, the knowledge and practices of nurses in Kebbi State regarding the management of neonatal jaundice have not been adequately studied. This research will assess the level of knowledge among nurses in Kebbi State about neonatal jaundice management, focusing on their understanding of the condition, the techniques used for treatment, and the barriers they face in providing care.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of early detection and treatment of neonatal jaundice, there is concern about the knowledge and practices of nurses in Kebbi State regarding its management. Insufficient knowledge about the condition, limited access to phototherapy equipment, and inadequate training may result in poor outcomes for affected newborns. This study seeks to assess the knowledge of nurses in Kebbi State regarding neonatal jaundice management and identify factors that impact the quality of care provided.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of knowledge among nurses in Kebbi State regarding neonatal jaundice and its management.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in managing neonatal jaundice in Kebbi State.

3. To identify the challenges nurses face in managing neonatal jaundice and suggest strategies to improve care.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses in Kebbi State regarding neonatal jaundice and its management?

2. How effective are nurses in managing neonatal jaundice in Kebbi State?

3. What challenges do nurses face in managing neonatal jaundice in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Kebbi State with adequate training in neonatal jaundice management are more effective in detecting and treating the condition than those without training.

2. Lack of resources, such as phototherapy equipment, hinders the ability of nurses in Kebbi State to manage neonatal jaundice effectively.

3. Nurses in Kebbi State with access to continuous education and updated guidelines have better outcomes in managing neonatal jaundice.

Definitions of Terms

• Neonatal Jaundice: A condition characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes in newborns due to an excess of bilirubin in the blood.

• Nursing Interventions in Neonatal Care: Actions taken by nurses to monitor, treat, and manage conditions like neonatal jaundice, including phototherapy and parental education.

• Phototherapy: A treatment for neonatal jaundice that uses light to break down bilirubin in the baby's blood.
